&#13 Summary

The brand-new SHAD “Semi Rigid” collection includes tank bags, a &#13 backpack and saddlebags or panniers.

These are relatively inexpensive but all nicely developed.

They are a great compromise among expensive and heavy hard bags and &#13 flabby soft bags.

The E48 Semi Rigid side bags appear straightforward sufficient but they are actually &#13 a extremely clever design and style.

SHAD has mounting racks (side bag holders) for the E48 for a assortment &#13 of common motorcycles.

The mounts and the bags are extremely straightforward to set up.

We fitted a set to a brand-new V-Strom 650 base model, offered &#13 courtesy of &#13 Ellicott City Motorsports in Maryland.

It took only about 15 minutes to complete the job, it is that straightforward.

And you are going to end up with a quite nice set of semi-rigid, expandable side &#13 bags that hold an wonderful amount of stuff.

In fact, we even fit a complete-face helmet inside an E48, with photographs &#13 under to prove it!

&#13 Introduction

If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to get some carrying &#13 capacity, the new semi-rigid line of luggage from SHAD may be the way to &#13 go.

We’ve never been fans of soft luggage. Unless it’s packed to the &#13 gills, it appears like a deflated beach ball and flops about like a &#13 fresh-caught mackerel on a hot deck.

But not absolutely everyone wants massive-buck, heavy difficult luggage. Semi-challenging (or &#13 semi-rigid) bags are the excellent compromise.

The trick is that you still want some type of framework to mount the &#13 bags basically throwing them over the back of the bike will not cut it.

SHAD recently announced a new semi-rigid lineup that at present &#13 consists of two diverse tank bags (E04 and E22) a backpack with an &#13 external helmet holder (E83) and the E48 Semi-Rigid Side Bags shown &#13 right here.

The E48 is deceiving, simply because it actually seems fairly little or &#13 compact, but it holds an amazing quantity if gear. That’s 1 of the &#13 advantages of semi-rigid motorcycle luggage — the thin walls and light &#13 weight offer a maximum size/weight-to-capacity ratio.

The E48 bags are presently offered for the following common &#13 motorcycles:

  • Honda CB500X/F/R

  • &#13

  • Honda VFR800

  • &#13

  • Kawasaki ER6, Z800

  • &#13

  • KTM Duke &#13 125/250/390

  • &#13

  • Suzuki V-Strom 650, GSR750

  • &#13

  • Yamaha MT 07, MT 09, FZ7, &#13 FZ8, FZ9, FJ09

  • &#13

SHAD also has bike-particular mounts for these motorcycles, along with &#13 a “universal” carrier that attaches to SHAD side mounts if you currently &#13 personal some SHAD panniers and want to swap out sometimes (or &#13 permanently) for the E48 semi-rigid bags.

We installed the mounting brackets (part quantity S0VS62SE) on a &#13 brand-new Suzuki V-Strom 650 that is sitting on the showroom floor of &#13 Ellicott City Motorsports in Ellicott City, Maryland.

If you happen to be nearby, quit more than and see the installation or far better however — &#13 acquire the bike, it’s on sale and the bags are free of charge!

&#13 This is the mounting kit for the V-Strom 650.

Installing the SHAD E48 Side Instances

Every single of the mounting kits for the E48 bags are particularly designed &#13 for straightforward bolt-on to any of the bikes listed above.

Installing the kit on the V-Strom 650 couldn’t be simpler and must &#13 only take 10-15 minutes max.

The kit comes with replacement bolts, spacers and washers and you &#13 merely take away the six mm hex bolts that hold the passenger foot pegs on &#13 the V-Strom (two bolts on every single side) and bolt in the side racks employing &#13 the five mm hex bolts in the kit and you’re accomplished.

I added a touch of blue Loctite to the SHAD five mm bolts simply because the stock 6 &#13 mm bolts had blue thread locker also.

No torque settings had been listed, so I tightened them until they &#13 had been…pretty tight. No need to overdo it, but I’d guess maybe 20 Nm?

The spacers that come with the SHAD kit fit into the huge recess in &#13 the passenger foot peg hanger. Then the washers that come with the kit &#13 go on the outdoors. Tighten the bolts and you happen to be completed.

Here are some photos:

SHAD E48 Information

The SHAD E48 measures about 45 cm long (18″) by 23 cm deep (9″) by 28 &#13 cm tall (11″).

Every bag has two zippers: one particular opens the bag and the other opens an &#13 expansion joint, which adds about 140 mm to the width at the best.

Just for kicks, we grabbed a size little HJC helmet off the shelf and &#13 as you can see under, it fits!.

&#13 A variety of attachment points on the back side of the E48.

&#13 Inside attachment points for the E48 bag. Note D-rings for carrying straps.

We had been amazed to uncover that a full-face helmet fits inside the E48!

That’s pretty incredible, taking into consideration that you can not fit a complete-face &#13 helmet in several/most tough panniers, regardless of size or cost.

The E48 bags are not totally waterproof but each comes with a &#13 silver-colored waterproof cover.

On prime of every bag are two straps that can be utilised to carry &#13 accessories or to tighten the E48 when the expansion panel is deployed.

Fitting the E48 on the Frame

The back side of the E48 has a massive, flat pocket that slides over &#13 the mounting frame. Then there are two hook-and-loop tabs that safe &#13 the front and rear of the bag on to the frame wiring.

The bags have the typical wide hook-and-loop straps on prime that fit &#13 under the seat to secure the side bags to the frame and the bike. Pull &#13 the straps tight and squeeze the hook-and-loop with each other and you happen to be accomplished.

We had to push the rear strap forward a bit to fit the V-Strom seat &#13 back on the bike, but once the seat is on, the E48 panniers are truly &#13 quite secure.

The bags come with waterproof rain covers.

More Attributes

The E48 bags have some nice reflective piping on the outside that &#13 complements the shape of the luggage.

Also, every single bag comes with two snap-on adjustable carrying straps so &#13 you can carry the bags more than your shoulder or like a backpack. The bags &#13 also have a built-in (sewn on) handle for effortless carrying.

To eliminate the bags from the bike, unfasten the hook-and-loop straps &#13 beneath the seat, then unfasten the tiny hook-and-loop straps that hold &#13 the front and rear of the bags to the mounting frame. Slide the bags off &#13 the frame and you’re accomplished.

List Price tag

The E48 panniers have a list value of $ 149.00 and the mounting kit &#13 for the V-Strom 650 lists for $ 98.00. Other mounting kits differ among &#13 $ 75.00 and $ 98.00.

&#13 Conclusion

The SHAD E48 bags are quite straightforward to install and hold a surprising &#13 amount of gear. They are lightweight but rugged and they appear very good &#13 better, in reality, than bulky difficult luggage on the mid-sized &#13 motorcycles for which the E48 series was designed.

The reflective piping on the outdoors adds to visibility but also &#13 provides a good styling touch to the luggage.

You can outfit a bike with the E48 side bags and a single of the new &#13 semi-rigid tank bags for about 1/three the price of a difficult luggage program and &#13 you will possibly have equivalent or possibly even far more storage.

Bottom line? SHAD ought to have no difficulty selling boatloads of the E48 &#13 semi-rigid side instances.
