History was created in Stockholm on March 4th, 2016 when the world’s best FMX riders met at the Scandanavian premiere of Night of the JUMPs 5th round of the FIM Freestyle MX Planet Championships at the Friends Arena.
The 1st rider to enter the competition was the regional Swedish rider, Fredrick Berggren. „Frog“ is considered an „OG“ of Evening of the JUMPs obtaining ridden amongst 2003 and 2005 and was an integral element of the series. But more than 10 years later because his final occasion, he has now turn out to be the „Old Swede“ and sadly discovered himself unable to keep up with the higher level of the present Planet Championship riders. This didn’t dampen the crowds spirit as they cheered for Frog even in his 12th position.
One more comeback celebration was in order for Libor Podmol (CZE). Soon after a lengthy enforced break, he threw himself back into the Planet Championship title fight. The second rider in qualifying shocked the competitors with the Surfer-Take off Tsunami Backflip and California Roll, and place him in Pole Position going into the final, without even bringing a trick to the quarter pipe.
Rob Adelberg (AUS) and Remi Bizouard (FRA) did take to the quarter pipe for the Open Loop backflip. With this, they moved safely into the finals. Also David Rinaldo and Maikel Melero survived the preliminary competition for a top six final, with Petr Pilat completing the line-up.
In the LifeProof Ideal Whip competition it came down to the dream final for the Swedish audience: Pat Bowden (AUS) against the nearby hero, Fredrik Berggren. Both had been pushing the limit, but in the end the Australian’s enormous whips secured his 6th win in the LifeProof Ideal Whip competition.
In the Maxxis Highest Air the prize money and title points have been shared amongst Massimo Bianconcini and Jose Miralles right after each riders missed the eight.00 metre mark and then brought down the bar, to make it a draw between the two riders.
In the final, a thrilling duel in between Maikel Melero and Libor Podmol was building. The reigning Planet Champion had to bring all of his tricks if he wanted a likelihood to win. He started things off with the Egg-Roll followed by the California Roll, Double Grab Flip, Tsunami Flip and Nac Flair on the Double-Up. Podmol countered with the Surfer take-off to Tsunami Flip over the Super Kicker, Cali-Roll, Cliffhanger Flip, Supercan Flip and finishing with the Volt. But with out a quarter pipe trick in the run, it was Melero who would end with the win and extend his existing winning streak to nine victories in a row.
With that, the Czech rider, even soon after such a long pause in competitors just missed out on a fairy tale comeback. Nonetheless, Podmol was content with second place, leaving with the Frenchmen Remi Bizouard and David Rinaldo to comply with.
In the overall ranking of the FIM Freestyle MX Planet Championship Maikel Melero remains unchallenged in front of Remi Bizouard and Rob Adelberg.
