Touring Essentials Weblog: Car tires on a street bike? The dark side beckons...

Each rider knows they must not leave house with out some duct tape. Like The Force in the Star Wars galaxy, duct tape has a light side and a dark side and seems to hold our universe together.

For a number of years now a subset of modern motorcycle riders have been placing tires intended for automobiles onto their motorcycles. These riders get in touch with themselves Darksiders. They aren’t specifically evil, but they have chosen a different path to comply with.

In the last couple of years two of my riding buddies have gone to The Dark Side. Largely, they feel it expenses also significantly for motorcycle tires and that the tires do not last as extended as they would like. On a 700-plus lb. sport touring motorcycle, I can’t say I disagree. Even so, tire life is receiving far better than it was a handful of years ago. Utilizing the dual-compound tires and creating certain I purchase the GT versions (for heavier bikes), I have place more than 30,000 km on a front tire and far more than 22,000 km on a rear. I believe this is fairly very good distance out of a higher-speed, Z-rated M/C tire, but I have paid the shop roughly the very same to install two tires on my motorcycle as I have paid for 4 tires on my Honda Civic. And the auto tires have a 130,000 km warranty.

I’m not convinced that going to The Dark Side is some thing I want to do in order to save some cash. What I have accomplished is purchased a lift table, tire changer, and static balancer. Now I can adjust my tires simply anytime I want and even save them to place back on in the future if I haven’t run them appropriate down. The lift table also makes it far easier to modify oil and do other operate on the bike, so this aging physique of mine appreciates it.

But back to the automobile tires. How do they perform? I’ve ridden street bikes with large, fat tires on and they have been a bitch to get leaned over and to maintain them leaned more than even though riding. Surprisingly, the exact same can’t be mentioned for vehicle tires on a bike. Both my buddies say the worst is slow speed parking lot-kind manoeuvres. There it takes a bit of work to turn the bike. Something above that and they say they have no issues. I’m not sure what stance the insurance coverage business would take on this practice if, say, a rider have been to shed manage in a corner and crash.

I’ve ridden behind each of my buddies on some seriously twisty roads and they handle corners just fine each gradually and at speed. It is quite intriguing to watch the rear tire lift and lean and flex on the speak to patch. They have confidence in the tires and anticipate practically 50,000 km out of a rear. Kind of tempting for those big epic rides on the interstates.

But just the same, I think I’ll keep my inner Sith Lord in verify and stick with the standard donuts.

Ride responsibly and take pleasure in your travels.
