Totally restored, 1943 Kettenkrad

Long time readers of The Kneeslider will remember we have written about Kettenkrads before, they’re the World War II light tracked military transport with a motorcycle front end built by NSU for the German army. The first time you see one it seems odd, but then you get a smile on your face because you just know it would be a hoot to drive off road. Over at Uncommon Motors we have a new listing for one that has been totally restored and functions just like new.

The Kettenkrad’s motorcycle handlebars and front wheel can be removed for extremely rough terrain or very muddy fields, but it is useful for extra stability on the highways and helps when taking wide turns. At low speeds and very sharp turns the tracks are individually braked.

David Reay, who commented on our earlier posts years ago was in charge of the rebuild and if it were a car, you would call it a frame off, nut and bolt restoration. There are lots of photos over at the listing on Uncommon Motors. If you like interesting vehicles, it’s worth a look. If you’re in the market, this one is offered along with with a reproduction Lehar trailer for 120,000 Euros.
